There’s something about having the kids home all summer that I never want to rush past. Working from home, it’s so nice to have them home with me. The pace slows down, the schedule disappears, and it’s just us trying to beat the heat and enjoy the weather.

So, when it’s time to send summer off, I want to do it right. My kids are old enough now to plan these parties themselves. Their favorite is a s’mores night with friends around the fire pit, and I love that they still want it. Here are some of the best end-of-summer party ideas that we’ve used in the past, plus the real products that make each one work.

The Gooderie’s Top Picks

BEST OVERALL

Brightown 100FT Outdoor String Lights

Works for movie night, the patio, or strung around the whole backyard. This is the one light set that shows up in almost every party idea on this list.

HERO MOM PICK

Cuisinart Smokeless Tabletop Fire Pit

This is the one that gets pulled out for s’mores nights with my kids and their friends. Smokeless, lightweight, and it does not smell like a campfire for two days after.

BEST FOR KIDS

Zerhunt Bubble Machine

Turn this on and the little ones are entertained for a genuinely long time. High output, easy to clean up, and it survives being outside all afternoon.

When Is the End of Summer 2026?

There are actually two different answers depending on who you ask. Meteorological summer always ends August 31, since it’s based on the calendar month, not the sun. Astronomical summer, the one tied to the actual position of the earth, usually runs until the September equinox, typically September 22 or 23. But, most moms consider the end of summer, the last week before school begins. Once school begins, summer loses its flair a bit as everyone is back to the normal, chaotic routine.

Backyard Movie Night

This is the easiest one to pull off and it never fails to feel special. You simply need blankets on the ground, a sheet or projector screen, and whatever movie the kids are currently obsessed with.

Popsicle or Snow Cone Bar

The fun part about this one is you just set it up once and then the kids will run it themselves for the rest of the day.

Water Balloon Send-Off

Nothing says summer is ending quite like one last, completely chaotic water balloon fight. This is the one my kids ask for every single year, even as teenagers.

S’mores Fire Pit Night

This is the one my kids run entirely on their own now that they are a bit older. They gather their friends around the fire pit, and honestly, watching them do it themselves and listening to them laugh is one of my favorite parts of the whole summer.

Last Splash Pool Party

If you have a pool, this is the one last big hurrah before the temperatures start to dip. Once school starts, the days of swimming are few and far between.

Sunset Patio Hangout

For when the kids have their own plans and it’s the grown-ups turn to sit outside a little longer than usual.

Kids Bubble and Chalk Party

Simple, cheap, and somehow still fun, no matter what age. I’ve learned through the years that sometimes the easiest party idea is the best one.
